Painted Desert

The Painted Desert was seabed 80 million years ago. As the land rose, some of the rock has eroded away, leaving the Arckaringa Hills in many shades of orange, yellow, and white shale on the slopes (hence called Painted Desert). The colours in the cliff formations are amazing and vary from yellow to brown, with all shades of orange and red, depending on the time of the day. As so often in the Australian Outback, nature turns on a brilliant firework of colours at dawn or dusk.
Location of Painted Desert or Arckaringa Hills. Painted desert hills are about 10km east of Arckaringa Homestead campground.

We set off early morning from Cadney Park to reach Painted Desert at sunrise. It is about 90km of gravel road with few nasty turns.
Twilight - and we are still not there. Getting little apprehension that we might not reach there in time.
Are we really late? Passed the Arckaringa Homestead and still few kilometers to go.
First sight of hills. And the sun rays are touching the hill tops.
Anyway just reached in time. And the colors of mountain start coming out too.
These hills are famous for striking bands of colors.
There is superb scenery, unbelievable colours and contours of landscape all around.
The colours in these hills formations are amazing and vary from yellow to brown, with all shades of orange and red, most pronounced at sunrise and sunset.
As so often in the Australian Outback, nature has started brilliant firework of colours, but only at dusk and dawn.
Parked the FoxRoo in parking area and walked up the mountain. There is a well marked track. No one was there while spent few hrs there.
View from top towards east - FoxRoo in the car park
View is amazing.
Really to see the best of these hills, have to go uphill and look around.
Every turn on the track brings a new scenery.
Needs a few days to explore the area.
View overlooking on the western side.
And looking towards East.
And towards south.
As the sun goes up in the sky, magnificient colors start disappearing.
